I’d like to take my mother, who is old, to a hot spring in Shikoku or Kyushu. Is there a barrier- free hotel which has meal menu for elderly people?

My mother always leave food in a meal at hotel located in touristic area because its portion is too much for her. When you get older, you still want to eat something delicious but not a lot of them. Does anyone know the hotel which serves a suitable food menu for elderly people and is safe for elderly people to stay over? For example, is there a bar to hold in the bath at hotel?

pay a respect to the long history “100-year-dining”

There are innumerable hot-springs in Shikoku and Kyushu, but I recommend “Kyushu Hotel” in Unzen. It is a long established typical large-scale hotel, so they have been paying full attention to the barrier-free scheme. The Unzen is the oldest resort area in Kyushu and there are many hotels which are more than 100 years old. I’m sure that you can enjoy the “100-year-old-dining” of the Kyushu Hotel which is facing the Unzen Jigokudani. The atmosphere of “Haikarana” (modern) enjoyed at the time of its opening is still there and you’ll be impressed by the dignified appearance with the accumulated long history. Having said that, as it is a hot-spring hotel after all, they don’t require their guests to observe “a dress code”, but a Yukata is OK. You don’t have to be too sensitive. You can enjoy your meal, at your own pace. I wish your trip with your mother who will have a long life to be a happy one.

The meal is delicious. / The hot-spring water is of good quality. / The staff’s responses are satisfactory.

Especially, Iya-buckwheat noodles are very tasty. The hot-spring water contains a lot of sulfur to make the skin smooth. The open-air hot-spring which you can approach by using the ropeway for 5 minutes to go 250m down is magnificent. If young person is with her, she will feel comfortable. You can enjoy the mountain to the full. You’ll be comforted truly. The staff are all kind and friendly. You need to check about the barrier-free as well as the amount of a meal for her

They have private hot-springs and the meal is delicious.

You can have your meal in your room and there are reserved individual hot-springs. The hot-spring water is of a high quality. The service is very dependable, which is good for elderly people. The price is reasonable, so it is the right hotel for spending a relaxed time with your family.

It is a hot-spring inn with an open-air hot-spring in Beppu.

Last autumn, I stayed at this hotel with 3 generations (a couple, children and grad parents) on holiday. The hot-spring has the Beppu Bay at the front. Besides the large bathroom, all rooms have their own open-air hot-spring, so you can enjoy soaking yourself. Every room has a different type, such as the Japanese, the Japanese and western mixed and the western-styled.

the meal is cooked with the local ingredients which were prepared with particular attention

It is the inn with the calm interior. The western-styled rooms have their own open-air hot-springs. You don’t need to go to the hot-spring. The hot-spring has the misty sauna. The quality of the hot-spring water is alkaline, so it is good for skin, which is towards women’s liking. You can enjoy the horse-sashimi and Japanese chicken. They give a particular attention to the local ingredients. That’s one of the reasons for my recommendation.

This is good for you.

My recommendation is Yufuin Bettei Jyu in Yufuin in the Oita prefecture. It is located in a very quiet place and you can experience a calm stay, forgetting about the day to day noise. As each room is independent, you can enjoy life at your own pace. It’s highly recommended.
